Observing how much fun the students were having bouncing on the inflatable cushion, Scurlock decided to detour his experiment into the realm of children's amusement. Soon after, the inflatable bouncer, or Space Walk, was born.
The Space Walk began as a simple inflatable mattress and, in 1967, Scurlock added walls to its bouncy base to create an enclosed bouncing room with clear plastic windows. The inflatable devices were kept inflated with two fans filing the base and the walls.
With popularity of the inflatable bouncers growing, people from all over wanted a bouncer of their own. In 1969, John Scurlock's wife Frances began renting out the inflatable bouncers at $19.95 for 24 hours. Initially, these bouncers were used for carnivals and fairs, but today bouncers are available to rent for any event.
Scurlock's original Space Walk is still wildly popular, but many different inflatable bouncers have been created in the last few decades. Those fond of classic playground equipment will be especially attracted to the large inflatable slides.
